“We Buy to Build through dedicated focus, expertise and collaboration”

Founding a company is the hardest act in business, only now that we’ve walked that path can we truly empathise with the many people and businesses we look to back. We’re proud and excited by what we’ve built but we’re never satisfied, we can always be better.

Every one of us at QPE works in the same open-plan office space, ensuring we are constantly connected and quick at conviction-led decision making. Often this means sharing the excitement of the latest investment opportunity, the challenge of a 14-meeting day or upcoming weekend plans; at QPE we work as a one-team culture to address all these situations together.

Entrepreneurial Empathy is one of our core values. It signifies our desire and ability to put ourselves in your shoes and is a hugely under-appreciated skill. It’s why we obsess about qualitative over quantitative and EQ before IQ.

What I relish most in my interactions with founders is understanding the personalities behind the success stories and seeing how QPE’s value creation playbook can help them accelerate their growth.

I am immensely proud of our Ambassador Network. It is through them I learned the value of creating strong relationships. Each of them has experienced working with us in our past and actively helps us portray those experiences onto our teams of tomorrow.

A lot of people ask where our money comes from. We are privileged that the majority is from endowments, foundations and philanthropic organisations. If we fail to deliver they lose scholarships and medical research funding. Few people then ask what motivates me each and every day.

I have always been competitive and had a strong desire to win, but I would much rather do so as part of a great team. I’m proud that the QPE team are exactly that and our contribution to every company always comes from several of us working together.

Fatherhood has given me a greater appreciation of our scarcest resource; time – how quickly it goes and how we all need to make the most of now. The same applies to many of the successful founders and managers we back, as more often than not they are making a once in a lifetime decision and at QPE we fully acknowledge and respect that.

Some of the first shares I ever owned were in my beloved Chelsea FC. Having acquired them at 166p per share it was heart breaking to see the company be taken private for 33p eight years later, but I certainly learnt a lesson that some passion projects are simply not investible.

I was born, raised, educated and always employed in Central London - apparently there aren’t too many of us around - but my roots are actually Slavic. Both my parents came to the UK very young and built a household where hard work and dedication was always the key to success. The single most important value my father instilled in me was “your word is your bond” and I have lived by this ever since.

Family life has taught me the importance of staying organised whilst being able to roll with the punches. With an Aussie wife and two young kids, chaos is something I’ve learnt to embrace. If and when I escape the chaos I enjoy any sport that can be played on ice (and snow) or measured on Strava, long haul travel (despite my fear of flying) and Old-World reds.

“We built the team we’d want to back”

Growing up, my father and many around me ran their own small businesses. I saw how tough it was to start something from scratch and admired their determination. I realised back then I wanted to help entrepreneurs achieve their goals.

I value enormously the opportunity to work with businesses which are poised for growth but require further capital and expertise to reach the next stage.

I get excited by working with people who want to excel and are passionate about what they do. I am lucky to have a job that I love where we can support management teams across many disciplines, from finance and business development to HR and tech innovation.

Even before moving to the UK in 2002, I was fascinated by the influence of this small island in the world. I believe entrepreneurship has been at the core of its success.

Living in Mexico taught me that markets can move very fast. Aiming for the best, whilst preparing for the unexpected, is the right strategy.

I like people that can change their mind in the light of new information. We work with teams that challenge themselves. It is the only way to stay on top.

After a 25-year professional career in private equity, finance and economic research, I have developed a true passion for our sectors. Our companies differentiate themselves based on quality. We love businesses where pushing for best-in-class is core to the strategy.

I learnt a lot from playing water polo at University. No matter how hard you work, nobody can win without a strong team.

Management teams considering partnering with QPE should know that we will work tirelessly to make their business extremely successful. Nothing makes us prouder than winning together.

One of our greatest achievements is our Ambassadors network. We are grateful they have chosen to work with us repeatedly over the last 15 years.

Empathy is at the heart of what we do. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes is paramount. I behave at work the same way I do at home. I am straightforward and transparent but respect other people’s views.

Success is never just about financial returns. We aim to develop meaningful long-term relationships with our stakeholders and work-life harmony.

Outside work, I spent most of the time with my wife, children, and more recently our new puppy. I still manage to squeeze a bike ride here and there and a weekly football match at my local park.

“A dedicated and relentless focus on research and origination”

I’ve always enjoyed the dual functions of the origination role – researching interesting niches to identify exciting businesses as well as developing long-term relationships with their owners and managers.

And forging long-term relationships with business owners is central to what we do so that when the time comes, they will consider us to be the best partner for and custodian of their business. And it’s very much a two-way thing – we want our future partners to be as excited to work with us as we are with them. It’s never too early to have that initial conversation and start the relationship.

My first job was with a start-up which grew to over 2,500 FTEs – there were many occasions in the early years when we really had to roll up our sleeves. As such, I totally understand the journey that many entrepreneurs go on and the energy and passion needed to succeed.

We’re very proud of the team we have built at QPE – having different views and opinions around the table is so important and we all learn a lot from each other’s past experiences. Each team member possesses high levels of both IQ and, importantly, EQ.

Every management team are different, with differing personal and professional goals, ambitions and objectives – we strive to find the right solution for each one. Empathy – understanding these differences – plays a huge part in this.

It’s never too early to have an introductory call or meeting. Often potential transactions could be years in the future – but what’s very clear is that our best results have been where we’ve had the best relationships with management, both professional and social. There are management teams of businesses we have long since exited who we still socialise with today.

I’ve always been an avid sportsman, whether it be cricket, football or golf – both of my parents were talented at various sports and always encouraged me. Its fair to say I watch more than I play these days, though I do continue to enjoy the odd round of golf.

My wife and I love to travel, particularly back to her hometown of Melbourne. A few weeks of summer in the middle of our winter, visiting the vineyards of the Yarra Valley or the Mornington Peninsula, or Boxing Day at the MCG … it’s just the ticket.

“Our QPE Ambassador Network supports our teams achieve and surpass their ambitions”

I have a natural curiosity in people, their beliefs, and visions. As part of the investment team at QPE, I thoroughly enjoy meeting a founder/management team, getting to know them and their business. I was exposed at an early age to a diverse mix of inspiring people. My father was a serial entrepreneur, an engineer constantly determined by new ventures, and my mother a University professor and local politician in southern Spain.

Our family life was overflowing with social interactions, contrasting views, and passionate discussions about business, politics, economics, and arts. I loved taking part and developed an insatiable thirst for knowledge. I became an avid reader in my effort to understand the world, and to substantiate my emerging thoughts.

I ran my first venture at the age of nine, although it was initially very lucrative, it ended rather abruptly and at a significant loss when the school intervened and made me return all the revenues (not operating profits!). To this day, I scrutinise regulator risk.

As a teenager, I volunteered in an orphanage, which influenced me profoundly. It illustrated the crucial and unfortunate effect of uncontrollable inequality of circumstances at birth. I became mindful of the potential positive impact of education and healthcare in society and those are the sectors I focus on at QPE. It also revealed how financial backing and business acumen are vital for success even behind the best-intentioned, most selfless actions.

Throughout my life I have treasured travelling, communicating in different languages, and embracing new cultures. I have spent transformative years across six countries. The UK is home and where I have lived the longest. I have been fortunate to study and work in Manchester, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and more recently in London. This experience has taught me that communication takes place on the recipient’s terms, is all about awareness and empathy and that it is paramount when partnering with a management team.

I worked for fifteen years in Finance, most recently with Credit Suisse in London advising professional investors on opportunities across asset classes. I am grateful for all that I experienced but part of me missed the direct contact to the real economy. At QPE I can preserve professional finance discipline and be close to authentic people and businesses. I value tremendously the privilege of straight influence in business successes.

I strive for continuous improvement, which sometimes means academics, and other times is about art, music, or a new sport. That drive to excel converts into an exciting multidisciplinary journey, developing skills with an MBA from London Business School and recently with an MSc in Contemporary Psychology. At QPE, I am relishing the tireless opportunity to discover and accelerate the growth of companies in the lower midmarket.

I feel a profound sense of duty towards society and future generations, and am passionately committed to creating a positive environmental, social, and governance impact. Furthermore, I believe it is a necessary condition for consistent long-term value creation. I am an obsessive member of QPE’s ESG Steering Group. In addition, I support charities in a wide range of areas, most notably I chair Miracles, a UK charity providing 24-hour emergency support for families in crisis and living in poverty.

On the weekends, I hurriedly chauffeur my three delightful children from activity to activity and attentively support them in their endeavours across the football, netball, hockey, and tennis pitches. I enjoy yoga and any attempt to improve my tennis. What I find most enjoyable, are long late-night social gatherings with my I-still-can’t-believe-you-exist husband and close friends over preferably fine food and wine.

“We operate with radical transparency across all our stakeholders”

All my great accomplishments have had teamwork at their core. This has been a constant in my life, from a deep passion for football and rowing during my early years. In rowing, teamwork was critical to victory knowing that everyone needed to expend 100% to win.

Diversity of thought and experience is core to everything we do at QPE. Growing up and living across four different countries, I have always understood the importance of diverse perspective when navigating uncertainty and bringing confidence to decision making.

Radical self-awareness and transparency are fundamental to growing as a person and organisation. I learned this acutely during my undergraduate economics degree and more recently receiving my MBA. True development came when you could understand your weaknesses and learn from others’ experience. At QPE we try our best to apply this principle to all interactions with management teams and partners.

I have always been inspired by entrepreneurship and take great pride in helping facilitate it. I was introduced to the passion of entrepreneurs through my college roommates who founded a clothing brand from our flat. This continued during my early career at Citi where I focused on asset-based lending and leverage finance, supporting middle market companies to achieve their growth ambitions through debt financing. These experiences led me to QPE where I was drawn to the focus on partnership and bringing energy to help build sector leaders.

Working across the education, life sciences and tech-enabled services sectors, I am fortunate to work with businesses that focus on digital transformation and the transition to this incredibly dynamic and rapidly changing economy. Yet, these businesses still need to meet the needs of their human talent. I have always been drawn to getting most out of people, whether that was captaining my rowing team, being a formal mentor to new analysts at Citi or more recently leading the London Business Finance Club. At QPE empathy is part of our ethos, which extends to all stakeholders of the business, especially as businesses grow and rapidly expand their talent base.

After work, I do my best to get outdoors when the weather permits. Whether that is for a walk in the local park or challenging myself to summit a local or distant mountain. However, when I am feeling a little lazier, I like nothing better than visiting the pub with my wife and friends to challenge each other in a board game.

“We focus on long term partnership through alignment of interest”

Listening is key to all effective communication. QPE is not there to tell entrepreneurs how to manage their businesses; the track records of the businesses we engage with always speak for themselves. However, by actively listening and applying entrepreneurial empathy, we excel at unlocking value and at accelerating growth for the entrepreneurs we back.

Born and raised in Liege, Belgium, from an Italian mother and Moroccan father, my studies and professional career took me through Madrid, Copenhagen, Luxembourg, New York and London, where I finally landed. This journey taught me the importance of cultural understanding and shaped my mind in never making generalisations. I apply this mindset every day at QPE, as every Management Team I meet is unique and requires a different approach to strategy for growth and value creation.

After 6 years with Ernst & Young and qualifying as a CFA charterholder, I leveraged my time at the London Business School to experience the private equity lower mid-market in the UK. It didn’t take long for me to understand that this was where I wanted to spend the rest of my career. I truly enjoy meeting with ambitious entrepreneurs hungry for growth and identify how QPE’s differentiated approach can help them excel and achieve their ambitions.

Just as much as I love direct interactions with entrepreneurs, advisers and industry experts, you will also often find me “geeking” behind my laptop as I love to analyse data to unearth information and KPIs crucial to gain operational insights and deliver growth.

The sectors we cover are all subject to significant disruption, further highlighted by the current socio-economic conditions globally. I do my best to spare a couple of hours every day to stay on top of the latest technological developments that impact our portfolio businesses and key sectors of focus.

We all have very different backgrounds at QPE, and our various vantage points allow us to challenge each other daily and bring additional value to every discussions, both internally and with the businesses we back. The most common theme you will find across our team is the energy and genuine passion we put in our work.

When I am not on a call with an entrepreneur or crunching data behind my laptop, you will find me running in Regents Park in London, trying to keep our new puppy busy, playing football whenever I have a chance or trying to catch up on one of the many opened books in my Kindle!

“We approach everything we do with our core values of Empathise, Energise and Excel”

As a member of the origination team, I spend most of my time at QPE speaking with ambitious management teams to understand their growth strategies, motivations and future plans.

I feel very proud to be an early joiner at QPE. It’s hugely exciting to have joined at the start of the fund, knowing that the businesses I contact now will be the relationships we forge over the lifetime of the fund and future funds to come.

We like to get to know businesses early – even if investment is many years away, an early-stage conversation is never time wasted on our side. It’s great to get to know a business as it scales, so that when the time is right, management teams think of us as the best partner going forward.

My favourite part of the job is getting to understand exciting new niches. Throughout my career I’ve been involved in deals ranging from pharmaceutical regulatory compliance and drug safety, to energy brokerage and car park management – it has been fascinating mapping and understanding the quirks and drivers of these diverse areas.

We excel at supporting management teams with a clear strategy whether that be through unlocking future acquisitions, the adoption of technology or entering new geographies, our role is to back ambitious entrepreneurs to achieve these.

Both my parents were teachers, so I’m delighted that investing in the education sector is a core focus for QPE. It’s very exciting to speak with exceptional education businesses that make a genuine impact on people’s lives and future careers.

Understanding and adapting to business owners’ aspirations is the key to our success. QPE was founded on the principal of entrepreneurial empathy, so we spend a lot of time understanding business owner’s goals so that we can help accelerate them.

Digital transformation is at the core of all our key sectors. We’re hugely excited by the prospect of investing in businesses where there is the opportunity to become best-in-class through the adaptation of technology.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing tennis (badly), skiing, and am a long-suffering supporter of Tottenham Hotspur. I have a cat named Gordon who regularly interrupts my QPE video calls!

“Our rules of engagement makes us trusted partners to the teams and businesses we back”

When I was 17, I took a risk to leave behind the country of my birth, Venezuela, amidst an economic and humanitarian crisis. I had been given the opportunity to live, study and work in the UK, a country where entrepreneurship has served as the spark plug to the country’s economic engine.

What I admire the most about entrepreneurs is they see opportunity where others don’t and have the courage and passion to take risks where others won’t.

Having lived in three separate countries, I know that I feel most vulnerable without my friends and family around me, as social beings we flourish when involved in supportive networks.

At QPE, we empathise with the ‘do it all alone’ approach that sometimes comes with being an entrepreneur. We look to provide a support system, whether that is as a sounding board to help get clarity on key decisions, a punching bag to let out frustrations or an onion peeler to help uncover a business’s true potential.

Throughout my life, my family’s entrepreneurial spirit has taught me the values that I believe are important to be successful. Whilst there will be times when we fail and times when we succeed, it is the courage and persistence to continue that is most important.

That entrepreneurial spirit is the same that I see in the team at QPE. We are not here to ‘rip up the rule book’, but really listen and engage with our management teams to help bring out the best in each other.

The current economic outlook has faced us with unprecedented challenge, but it has taught me that we must remain positive, optimistic and future orientated. I believe tough times don’t last but tough entrepreneurs do.

The best entrepreneurs are not only focused on the bottom line and their own ventures but have the empathy and generosity to understand the importance of giving back to their communities.

In my short yet colourful career, I have become acutely aware that each project has its own unique challenges. As a business grows, different problems and opportunities demand different solutions. Our diverse team at QPE excels at helping energise exceptional management teams to exploit new opportunities and navigate new challenges.

Learning to kitesurf has me chasing the wind across the world when I am not working. When there is no wind, you’ll find me under water diving and trying to fulfil a lifelong goal of spotting a sea turtle in the wild!

“Entrepreneurial Empathy is at the core of our business”

Working in PE is a privilege. As investors we get to meet and work with a wide array of impressive, bright and ambitious entrepreneurs. It is humbling, inspiring and rewarding as well as being incredibly interesting and hugely enjoyable!

My father was owner and manager of a small business and often brought home his successes as well as his daily trials and tribulations. This backdrop provided me with an early understanding and empathy of what goes with managing a business. It can be challenging and lonely without the right support.

I reluctantly admit that I enjoyed studying Economics at Cambridge University. I was engrossed by the subject and how theory can be used to explain what goes on in the outside world. I’m a geek at heart that enjoys the application of theory, data and judgement to inform decision making.

I started my career almost twenty years ago as a corporate finance advisor at EY, focussed primarily on lower to mid-market technology, media and telecoms businesses. I also qualified as a Chartered Accountant during that time.

A short period in bulge bracket investment banking, primarily spent building and perfecting slides on Microsoft PowerPoint in the run up to and during the 2008 financial crisis quickly made me realise that I preferred to work with and add value to smaller, entrepreneurial businesses! On that note, Monkey Business is a great read.

I made the move to private equity early in my career as I was really keen to proactively help businesses grow and see the management teams that I support succeed.

Prior to joining QPE, I was at Rutland Partners LLP, a hands-on private equity investor for twelve years, investing in and supporting market leading businesses in transition; requiring change programmes and active portfolio management to unlock unfulfilled potential.

We at QPE do not provide a commoditised offering. If you are looking for a silent, passive provider of capital, thank you for visiting, we wish you all the best in the future but without meaning to offend, you are on the wrong website.

These days there are numerous sources of capital for entrepreneurs, however, picking the right partner to support the next stage of growth is incredibly important. Business owners really need to think about what prospective investors bring to the table in terms of capabilities, network / relationships and experience as well as track record. Personal chemistry and the ability to build an open, honest and trusting relationship is at least equally if not more important.

I joined Queen’s Park Equity in its inception. It was an easy decision. The opportunity to be part of a young, ambitious yet supportive investment business with a set of clear value-enhancing strategies at an early stage was incredibly attractive. Not many first-time funds were raised during the coronavirus lockdown. We like to think it reflects the opportunities we chose to support, the value we bring to our management teams and our exceptional personal track records.

The acceptance and adoption of technology has really accelerated since the coronavirus lockdown as people across the globe are forced to embrace change. We are especially excited by businesses at the forefront of this change, backing entrepreneurs with a clear vision on transforming the markets they operate in.

At QPE, we do not buy out businesses. We do not take over the day to day running of businesses. We are experienced and highly successful investors who partner with ambitious management teams. We add value through strategic discussion and support opportunities to accelerate growth through the provision of insight and capital.

We are all humans at QPE, not robots. We collaborate, bounce ideas off each other and talk about everything, not just the latest trading update. We like to instil this open culture into the partnerships we build with teams.

Outside of the office, I’m sometimes found (when my young family allow me to!) pushing myself in the local CrossFit box or running along the River Thames attempting to undo the consequences of my love of food. I also support Arsenal, though this has become more difficult in recent years.
